A Comparative Study of Bipolar Endoprosthesis for the Treatment Between Femoral Neck Fracture and Avascular Necrosis of Femoral Head

Abstract
From January 1988 to July 1990, at Pusan Paik Hospital, 57 hips in 50 patients were treated by surgical implantion of bipolar hip prosthesis either with or without cement fixation of femoral stem.
Twnety-two of the prosthetic replacements were done for the treatment of femoral neck fracture and 35 for the avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The cases were followed from 2 years to 5 years (average 2 years and 10 months) and assessed in
terms
of functional and roentgenographic results. Authors compared the data of the femoral neck fracture with that of the avascular necrosis.
In conclusion, bipolar prosthetic replacement shows more inferior results in the avascular necrosis than in the femoral neck fracture.
